What is a Toric IOL?

Toric IOL is an intraocular lens with cylindrical power, used to correct corneal astigmatism during cataract surgery simultaneously. Patients with corneal astigmatism >1.0D can significantly reduce postoperative residual astigmatism and improve uncorrected visual acuity with Toric IOL implantation.

Alpins Vector Analysis Method

This tool uses the Alpins-recommended vector method for astigmatism analysis, with three core concepts:

SIA (Surgically Induced Astigmatism, Vector Sum)

Astigmatism change caused by the surgical incision itself; magnitude related to incision location, length, and arc.

TIA (Target Induced Astigmatism)

The amount of astigmatism planned to be corrected, which is the original corneal astigmatism.

ORA/DRCA (Obligatorily Remaining Astigmatism/Corrected Result of Astigmatism)

Actual postoperative residual astigmatism; ideally should be <0.5D.

Calculation Steps

  1. Enter preoperative corneal astigmatism (K1, K2 and their axes)
  2. Enter incision location (SIA estimated value)
  3. Tool calculates Toric IOL power and axis
  4. Select the closest available IOL model

Toric IOL Selection Principles

  • Prefer over-correction rather than under-correction
  • High error risk when axis is close to 180° or 90°; verify carefully
  • Custom IOL recommended for high astigmatism (>3.0D)
